2019 Prevention Needs Assessment
Every two years SPIFFY (the strategic planning initiative for families and youth) teams with the Northampton Prevention Coalition and the Northampton Public Schools to survey all 8th, 10th, and 12th grade students. The purpose of the survey is to gather information needed to plan important prevention and intervention programs to combat such problems as substance use, bullying, and dating violence in schools and communities. The survey yields data on student behaviors, risk factors, protective factors, and students' perceptions of these risk and protective factors. This data not only informs programming but provides NPS, SPIFFY, and NPC with the information it needs to apply for grants to fund such programs.

JFK 8th grade students will take the survey on March 13; NHS 10th and 12th graders on March 12; SVAHS 10th and 12th graders on April 3.

COMMUNITY EVENTS

The Strengthening Families Program: For Parents and Youth 10-14
This is a 7-session program open to all families raising 10-14 year olds (5-8th grade). The current session began Thursday Feb. 14-March 28 (skip 2/21) at White Brook Middle School in Easthampton. It's free, with a healthy dinner and childcare for younger siblings also provided. Part of the time, families meet separately, giving caregivers a chance to talk to each other and watch video skits of other families that is both entertaining and contains useful information about how to show love and set limits. Students are learning about empathy, friendship, communication as well as peer resistance skills as they may begin to face more negative social pressures in middle and high school. When families are all together, the focus is on family bonding time, with fun games, family projects that highlight family values and connection. SFP10-14 is the number one rated drug prevention program by the World Health Organization, but mostly it's just fun! Each week there are giveaways and raffles including a 2019 pass to Look Park this session!
