Join Us for Our Final PTO Meeting of the Year on Tuesday, May 29 from 6-7:30pm
Our last PTO meeting of the year is Tuesday, May 29 from 6-7:30pm in the JFK Library. Help us plan for the end of the year, summer initiatives, and a new PTO in the fall. All are welcome!

The Eighth Grade Picnic is June 11 (Volunteers Needed!)
WHAT?? Lots of fun including a DJ, Photo Booth, T-shirt signing, games and food will be provided. WHEN?? Monday, June 11 during school hours. RAIN DATE: Wednesday, June 13. WHERE?? Look Park – Pines Theater. Everybody’s chipping in to help our 8th graders mark the completion of their middle school years! Use this form to let us know how you can help. Please send donations (any amount is greatly appreciated) with this form. Checks are payable to JFK PTO and be sure to write 8th Grade Picnic in memo line. Volunteers are needed from 10am to 2:30pm. Volunteers must be CORI checked in advanced through the main office at JFK.

The Annual JFK Day of Service is coming up on June 12 (Rain Date June 13)
All students and staff will be participating in morning community service activities that range from working in the elementary schools, landscaping in Look Park, pulling invasive plants from Fitzgerald Lake, building bird houses, and more. Stay tuned for e-mails requesting much needed items you can donate to this event. If you live within walking distance of JFK in Florence and have a yardwork project you would like help with, please contact us and we can send over a team of middle schoolers to tackle it. Got mulch? Our students can help spread it! Got weeds? They’ll take care of it. Sticks to pick up? We’re on it. Just e-mail us at jfkmspto@gmail.com and we’ll hook you up on June 12.

Call for New PTO Officers and Member Volunteers
The PTO will be seeking a new president next year and more PTO members to help with events. A new secretary to take minutes and assist with the agenda at our monthly meetings is also needed. Email us at jfkmspto@gmail.com if you can help.

Rescheduled for May 30: Alternate Paths to Success after High School (7-8:30pm)
Join the Northampton High School PTO in the NHS Little Theater for a panel discussion and Q&A from the audience. The panel will include Bryan Lombardi, parents of NHS alumni, and Jane Sarouhan, Vice President of the Center for Interim Programs, the first and longest running gap year counseling service in the US.

Funktionlust: Last Improv Show of the Year on Friday, June 1
Come and Enjoy an Evening of Laughter! On Friday, June 1 FUNKTIONLUST
 will be performing in the Northampton High School’s Black Box Theater. The show starts at 7pm and costs only $5! Funktionlust, now in its 13th year is the only Improv group at NHS and has enough liveliness to power Childs Park! But with all their spontaneity and enthusiasm., they have entertained their audiences at Northampton’s First Night, Art’s Night Out at Click Workspace and Historic Northampton, at Senior Centers, with the Umass’s Mission Improvables.

Youth Substance Use Prevention in Challenging Times on Tuesday, June 5 at 6:15pm
Karen Jarvis-Vance, program director for the Northampton Prevention Coalition, will lead a presentation on what the new laws on marijuana might mean for families with teens. Research and ideas on how to support your child to make healthy choices will be part of the discussion. The presentation will take place right before the JFK Chorus Concert at Northampton High School’s Little Theatre.

Northampton Education Foundation Showcase on Friday, June 8 from 6-7:30 pm
Please join us at the Northampton Education Foundation Showcase during Northampton’s Arts Night Out at the 
Center for the Arts at 33 Hawley Street (Northampton Community Arts Trust building). Enter at lower level, off parking lot. Refreshments included. Celebrate with us as we showcase the projects that Northampton’s public school teachers and students create with NEF grants and thank the donors who contribute to our exciting programs. The 2018 Showcase will feature various projects, including: Scholastic Arts and Writing (JFK) and Working to Eliminate Racism (JFK). The Northampton Education Foundation funds projects and programs that expand educational opportunities, foster creativity, and enhance academic experiences in Northampton's public schools. NEF also works to broaden community support for our public schools.

May 23 is the Last Day to Order JFK T-Shirts and Sweatshirts
Get ready for summer and next fall by ordering your JFK MS T-shirt or sweatshirt now. T-shirts are $15 and sweatshirts $30. Cash or checks payable to JFK PTO can be sent to school. Look for the flyer that went home from school or download one at this link.

The tickets for the Academy of Music Spring Concert will be sold only in advance. No tickets will be available at the door. To request up to 4 tickets, don’t forget to return the form sent home or contact Mrs Williams before May 25.

Pioneer Valley Invitational Ultimate Frisbee Tournament May 19 and 20
Over 60 high school teams from several states and Canada will converge on Northampton on May 19 and 20 for the fifth annual Pioneer Valley Invitational Ultimate Frisbee tournament. The tournament is a fundraiser for the Northampton High School boys and girls ultimate program and two other worthy causes. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to Ultimate Peace, a non-profit that builds bridges of understanding and friendship between youth who live in communities divided by conflict using Ultimate Frisbee as our tool. Funds will also support UltimateGood.org. Teams will play at the Oxbow Marina fields. More information is available at http://pvinvite.org

The Fourth Annual Wild Goose Chase takes place on Sunday, May 20 at Look Park
Whole Children’s Wild Goose Chase is an annual 5K, kids’ carnival, and family fun races for all ages and abilities. Race events include a chip-timed 5K race and 1 mile run/walk/roll, as well as a slew of kids' races. The carnival is hoppin’ with wagon rides, face painting, live music, games, and more. https://www.wholechildren.org/wild-goose-chase/

In Appreciation
The weather couldn’t have been better for Teacher Appreciation Week, and the teachers and staff of JFK send a big thanks to all those who donated, cooked, baked, decorated, and assisted with this week’s Teacher Appreciation Brunch. We had lots of goodies to share and we couldn’t have done it without your support. Some quotes: “Thank you for lunch today! It was delicious.” And: “Many thanks from all for a wonderful celebratory brunch. Everything was delicious and much appreciated. Thanks as well for your tremendous support all year long.”

May MCAS Testing
May 14-15: Grade 8 Science and Technology
May 12-25: Make-up Testing
The testing will begin promptly each day at 7:55am. Please encourage your child to get a good night’s sleep, to have breakfast, and to do his or her very best each day. It is also particularly important that your student arrive at school on time. Students are asked to bring a book to read in the event they complete their testing before the end of the scheduled time. For more info, refer to the letter sent home from school.

JFK Theatre Workshop on Wednesday, May 16, at 6:30 in the JFK Cafetorium
The JFK Theatre Workshop presents "Romeo & Winifred: A Tragical Comedy in Two and a Half Acts" on Wednesday, May 16, at 6:30pm in the JFK Cafetorium. This spoof of Shakespeare's famous play, which includes numerous humorous references to Shakespeare's other works, is sure to entertain parents and children alike. Suggested donation is $3 for adults, $1 for students, but all are welcome to attend for some fun family entertainment.

Special Event: JFK Jazz Band with Jamie Kent at the Academy of Music on May 19

Supporting JFK Teachers through Teacher Grants
The JFK PTO continues to help teachers with classroom initiatives using your generous donations. Some of the latest grants approved include supplies to create zines for an 8th grade ELA memoir unit, funding to support the JFK Theatre Workshop, and support for special activities for the ELA afterschool club. If you are interested in helping with the teacher grant committee, please send an email to jfkmspto@gmail.com.

TODAY! K-8 Art Show & Opening Reception, May 4 from 4-6pm
The art teachers from the elementary schools and the middle school cordially invite students and their families to JFK Middle School on Friday, May 4 from 4-6pm for an opening reception. The art exhibition will host selected original artwork by students from Leeds, Ryan Road, Jackson Street, Bridge Street and JFK Middle Schools. There will be light refreshments served and beautiful 2D and 3D artwork. The show will run from May 4 through May 24. Please join us for this wonderful event! Thanks so much! TODAY! Last Day to Buy JFK Yearbooks Online
The last day to order the yearbook online at coffeepond.com is today, May 4. After that, from May 5th to June 20th, the yearbook can be ordered by check or cash for $28. All yearbooks will be issued in homeroom on the last day of school. For any student who will not be at school on the last day, arrangements can be made.

VOLUNTEER! Teacher Appreciation Brunch on Wednesday, May 9 at JFK (New Date!)

Calling All Cooks! JFK Teacher and Staff Appreciation Day is Wednesday May 9
. This is the perfect chance to let our talented teachers and staff know how much we appreciate their hard work. Sign up to cook something, pick up something at the store, or help out on the day of the brunch. Click on the link below and see all the details of how, where, and when you can help. If you have any questions, contact the PTO at jfkmspto@gmail.com.
We need food and drinks to be served for around 100 faculty and staff. DROP OFF YOUR DISH either on Tuesday, May 8 between 2-4pm in the school office or on Wednesday morning, May 9 between 7:30-10:30am. Label your containers with your name if you would like them returned. You can pick up your containers in the school office or ask your child bring them home. You can also drop any packaged items that don't need refrigeration in the office any time on Monday, May 7 or Tuesday, May 8. But, please, no food with nuts, thanks!

If you prefer to donate funds to the purchase of food and drink, you can send a check made out to JFK PTO to be delivered to the main office.

New Items on Sale--JFK Food Services Update
Last week we ran the information from NPS Food Services as sent home on a flyer to parents. The list showing the new items being sold at JFK is published on the Northampton Public Schools Food Services web site. Parents need to visit the web site to find information for the following items on sale daily as of April 24: Crumbled Cookie Cone, Chocolate Shortcake, Vanilla Sandwich, Goody Man WG Crispy Squares, Baked Cheetos, Smartfood Popcorn, Strawberry Shortcake, Baked Lay’s Chips, Reduced Fat Doritos, and Reduced Fat Doritos Spicy Sweet Chili flavor. Contact Food Services for any questions or to make changes to your student’s account.

Valley Gives Thank You!
Thank you to everyone who contributed to our 2018 Making Middle School Mobile Valley Gives campaign on May 1. Together we raised nearly $2500 for programs and trips. Our students and teachers appreciate your support!

Northampton Parks & Recreation for your JFK Middle School Student!
Enroll in Teen Expeditions, for kids entering grades 7-10, for any one week session beginning June 25 all the way through August 10. This unique day camp program is our adventure based trip camp! Each day is filled with exciting experiences. Your teen might be hiking around the Pioneer Valley, swimming at a beach, biking along the Norwottuck Rail Trail, reaching great heights at a ropes course, exploring Brownstone Adventure Park (a water based adventure park), and much more! Experienced staff lead our unique trips & adventures. We also offer different summer sports program to help develop skills and confidence! Throughout the summer there will be one week sessions for Baseball, Basketball, Lacrosse, and Soccer. Tennis skills and drills sessions are offered all summer long.
