JFK Store Celebrates Friendship Week (2/12-2/16)
The JFK Store was a big success in December and a lot of fun for students. We’re planning a 2-for-1 special Friendship Week at the store next week, with every second item free as long as it’s bought for an upstander or a friend (clothing items not included). We will also have JFK Sweatshirts ($30) and JFK T-Shirts ($15) on sale, so if your student missed the chance to stock up on JFK spirit items in the fall, this may be the last chance to buy a JFK sweatshirt before the warm weather arrives! Checks can be made out to JFK PTO.

Volunteer to staff the store from 10:45am to 12:45pm, Monday to Friday, February 12-16. It’s easy and training is provided. The kids will thank you. Sign up to help at: http://www.signupgenius.com/go/10c0e4ea9aa2aabff2-jfkschool

NOTE: If you plan to volunteer, please remember you need to have a current CORI. Ask at the JFK front office if you need to apply.

JFK School Nurse Asks for Your Help with Snack Donations
The Health Office is looking for snack donations. Many students come to the nurse when they don’t eat breakfast or lunch. Between September and December 2017, there were 188 students who visited the nurse for snacks. Please consider sending in a healthy snack option such as: low-sugar cereal, saltines, pretzels, granola bars, cheese sticks or GoGurt (yogurt in a tube). If thirty families donate just one item, that will help us meet our snack needs. Items can be dropped off in the main office and labeled for the Health Office. Your child can drop them off in the office before school, too. Thank you!

JFK Spotlight Event – Thursday, 3/1/18, 6:30-8pm at JFK
The Spotlight Event is a great opportunity for all incoming students and families to visit our building for an introduction to our school community. The event is open to anyone who is interested in learning more about JFK. The evening provides an informal introduction to many JFK faculty and staff, classrooms, curriculum, samples of student work, and extracurricular activities. Visitors will also be invited to enjoy performances by several JFK clubs and activities.

February 12-16 - Volunteers needed for JFK Store (10:45am-12:45pm)

Today at JFK
Today’s MLK at JFK/Black Lives Matters/Day of Diversity was a huge success. Students, teachers, staff, parents, members of School Council, and community members came together to create an hour-long assembly that had everyone's attention and participation. The SOCA (Students of Color Alliance) students read original poetry to introduce the day; Amherst Area Gospel Choir sang African freedom songs and songs from the Civil Rights era; Professor Ousmane Power-Greene spoke on the importance of music in movements of justice and equality. Mr. El-Are performed two magnificent hip-hop numbers, complete with multimedia presentations and some background on the life and work of Dr. King. JFK A Cappella and members of the Chorus sang "Glory" from the movie Selma, and the Jazz Ensemble performed Louis Armstrong's "What a Wonderful World." The entire school rose to sing "We Shall Overcome" to end the assembly, and Principal Wilson pledged to continue the mission to build a more inclusive school.

JFK School Nurse Update
This has been a very unusual flu season and our school nurse would like to send out these reminders to parents. Below are recommendations taken from the CDC to help reduce the spread of flu.
  • Get a yearly flu vaccine. Even though it doesn’t cover all strains, it is the single best way to protect against or shorten the severity of the flu. Talk to your health care provider about this. It's not too late to get the vaccine!
  • Stay home when sick. If you or your child have a fever or signs of a fever (chills, feeling very warm, flushed appearance, or sweating), you should stay home for at least 24 hours until fever-free without the use of fever-reducing medicine (Tylenol/Advil).
  • Encourage all family members to cover coughs and sneezes with a tissue or their bent arm. If they use a tissue, they should put the used tissue in a trash can and wash their hands.
  • Encourage frequent handwashing using soap and water for 20 seconds, dry hands with a paper towel, and use the paper towel to turn off the faucet. If soap and water are not available and hands are not visibly dirty, an alcohol-based hand sanitizer containing at least 60% alcohol may be used.
  • Encourage all family members to keep their hands away from their nose, mouth, and eyes.
  • Routinely clean surfaces and objects that are touched often, such as tables, desks, countertops, doorknobs, computer keyboards, hands-on learning items, faucet handles, and phones.
  • Studies have shown that the flu virus can live and potentially infect a person for only 2 to 8 hours after being deposited on a surface. Therefore, special sanitizing processes beyond routine cleaning are not necessary or recommended to slow the spread of flu, even during a flu outbreak.
  • Visit the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) website for more information at: https://www.cdc.gov/flu/keyfacts.htm
